Kathy Bowrey - Why did David Unaipon not benefit from his patents?

David Unaipon is best known for his 1914 shearing invention but there were many others, related to his fascination with physics. Studying the State Library’s collection of Australian patent records reveals, for the first time, an accurate record of what patents Mr Unaipon actually held. Why none of the inventions made any money leads to a discussion of the connection between Aboriginal Australia and pastoralism, anthropology and government policies that stymied development of Australian industry.
