Students will learn to decode the secrets of visual literacy and uncover the deeper meaning of picture book illustrations.

In this 90 minute program students will:

learn about the concepts of visual literacy
analyse a variety of picture book illustrations
view ‘up-close’ the original illustrations for Miss Franklin: How Miles Franklin's Brilliant Career Began by Libby Hathorn and illustrated by Phil Lesnie
illustrate a page using visual literacy concepts to create a book to take back to school.

Stage 2

English 

EN2-RECOM-01 Reads and comprehends texts for wide purposes using knowledge of text structures and language, and by monitoring comprehension.
EN2-UARL-01 Identifies and describes how ideas are represented in literature and strategically uses similar representations when creating texts.

Creative Arts

VAS2.1 Represents the qualities of experiences and things that are interesting or beautiful by choosing among aspects of subject matter.
VAS2.3 Acknowledges that artists make artworks for different reasons and that various interpretations are possible.
VAS2.4 Identifies connections between subject matter in artworks and what they refer to, and appreciates the use of particular techniques.

VAS3.1  Investigates subject matter in an attempt to represent likenesses of things in the world. 
VAS3.2  Makes artworks for different audiences assembling materials in a variety of ways. 
VAS3.4  Communicates about the ways in which subject matter is represented in artworks.
