Representing change
Students discuss the message conveyed by the picture book ‘Out of the Egg.’ Students then engage in a broader analysis of the role of picture books in society through the creation of Twitter style discussion threads.
Student activities
Task no. 1
Being heard
Listen to Tina Matthews speaking about the illustration of the chick hatching.
Discuss the following questions:
- What message does the character of the little chick send to young people about tackling problems in society?
- Can you think of any young people in the real world who have stood up for change in the way that the little chick stands up to her mother?
- What feeling are readers left with at the end of the story? How is this achieved?
Task no. 2
The role of picture books
Compose a 140-character Twitter post in which you answer the following question using evidence from the story ‘Out of the Egg.’
- What is the role of picture books and storytelling to improve the world around us?
Create a thread for each twitter post by passing them around the room, each student adding ideas which provide further depth and response to the ideas in the original.
