Patterdale landscape, Tasmania1833–34

John Glover was 64 when he emigrated with his wife to Tasmania, to join his sons in 1831. Glover was a well-known and successful landscape painter in England — with a formula of romantic views of the Lake District and Italy.

In part he emigrated because of, as he noted, ‘the expectation of finding a new Beautiful World…’ to paint. Glover’s talent was rejuvenated in Tasmania. His soft, expansive landscapes were often hymns to the Tasmanian landscape — as with this image near his farm in the early morning light. In early 1832 Glover acquired land at Deddington near Evandale and built a homestead which he named Patterdale.
